How to Open Your Swimming Pool After Winter (Step-by-Step Guide for Crystal Clear Water)

When the weather starts warming up and the days get longer, it’s officially pool season again. But before the cannonballs, floaties, and backyard BBQs begin, there’s one important task every pool owner faces: opening the pool after winter.

If you’ve never done it before, opening a swimming pool can feel overwhelming. Between removing the cover, reconnecting equipment, priming the pump, and balancing the water, there are several important steps that ensure your pool starts the season clean, safe, and ready to swim.

In this complete guide, we’ll walk through exactly how to open your swimming pool after winter so you can enjoy crystal-clear water all summer long.

Step 1: Remove Your Winter Pool Cover

The first step in opening your pool is removing the winter or safety cover.

Before taking the cover off, make sure to:
1) Pump off any standing water
2) Remove leaves and debris
3) Allow the cover to dry if possible

Once clean, carefully remove the cover and store it in a dry place for the season. This helps prevent mold, mildew, and damage so your cover lasts for many seasons.

Step 2: Reinstall Pool Equipment and Drain Plugs

During winterization, many components are removed or drained to prevent freezing damage. Now it’s time to reinstall them.

Common items to check include:
1) Pump basket
2) Drain plugs
3) Pressure gauge
4) Filter drain plug
5) Heater manifold plug

Most pool pumps have two drain plugs, usually one in the front and one on the side. These allow water to drain from both the impeller and pump housing during winter.

When reinstalling these components:
1) Hand tighten fittings
2) Avoid overtightening plastic parts
3) Make sure all O-rings are lubricated

A small amount of pool-safe gasket lubricant helps prevent leaks and keeps seals from drying out.

Step 3: Check the Pool Filter and Pressure Gauge

Your pool filter plays a critical role in water clarity. Whether you have a sand filter, cartridge filter, or DE filter, make sure the following are installed correctly:

1) Filter drain plug
2) Pressure gauge
3) Sight glass (for sand filters)

When installing the pressure gauge:
1) Wrap the threads with Teflon tape
2) Make sure the gauge reads zero before installation

If it does not read zero, it may need to be replaced. Hand tighten the gauge carefully. Overtightening can crack the valve housing.

Step 4: Reinstall Return Jets and Eyeballs

Next, reinstall the return jets inside the pool. These small fittings help circulate water throughout the pool.

When installing the jets:
1) Aim them slightly downward
2) Avoid overtightening
3) Ensure they are seated properly

Directing them downward helps improve circulation and prevents stagnant areas in the pool. Good circulation is essential for keeping your pool water clean and balanced.

Step 5: Remove Winter Plugs From the Skimmer

Your skimmer likely contained a winter plug, gizmo, or foam protection device to prevent freeze damage. Remove these and reinstall:

1) Skimmer basket
2) Skimmer lid
3) Any internal fittings

If antifreeze was used in the plumbing lines during closing, you may notice some discharge when the pump starts. This is normal and will flush out quickly.

Step 6: Prime the Pool Pump

Priming the pump ensures water is properly moving through your system.

To prime your pump:
1) Fill the pump basket housing with water
2) Check that the lid O-ring is clean and lubricated
3) Secure the pump lid tightly
4) Turn the system on
5) Allow the pump to run for about two minutes

If water does not begin circulating, turn the pump off and prime it again with more water. Sometimes it takes a few attempts to fully remove air from the system.

Once primed correctly, you should see water moving through the return jets.

Step 7: Open Valves and Water Features

If your pool has additional water features, open those valves once the system is running. These may include:

1) Deck jets
2) Waterfalls
3) Bubblers
4) Spa spillovers

Ensure all plumbing lines are open so water flows freely through the system.

Step 8: Shock and Sanitize the Pool Water

After the system is running properly, the next step is restoring water chemistry. Most pools require a strong sanitizing treatment after sitting all winter.

Start by adding liquid chlorine to eliminate bacteria and algae. If the pool water appears green, cloudy, or dirty, additional algaecide may also be necessary.

Run the pump continuously while chemicals circulate. Proper filtration and circulation will help bring the water back to crystal clear.

Step 9: Make Your Pool Water Feel and Smell Amazing

Once your pool water is clean and balanced, you can take your swimming experience to the next level. Many pools still carry that strong chemical smell even after opening.

That’s where Pool Refresh makes a huge difference.

Pool Refresh is designed to:
1) Moisturize and soften pool water
2) Eliminate harsh chemical odors
3) Improve water comfort for swimmers
4) Add a light, refreshing scent

Instead of that harsh chlorine smell, your pool can feel more like a luxury resort experience. Just add Pool Refresh directly to the water and let your filtration system circulate it.

The result is clean water that feels better on your skin and smells incredible.

Step 10: Let the Pool Circulate and Clear Up

After adding your startup chemicals and Pool Refresh, allow the pool to circulate for several hours.

During this time:
1) Brush pool walls and floor
2) Vacuum debris if needed
3) Monitor filter pressure
4) Continue testing water chemistry

Avoid installing ladders or accessories until the water becomes fully clear. This makes brushing and cleaning much easier.

Within a day or two, your pool should be clear, balanced, and ready for swimming.
